NSERC Grants

NSERC Engage

A short-term research or development project aimed at addressing a company specific problem that can be extended up to 6 months. Connects businesses to university researchers for new R&D partnerships. Requires a 183A Letter of Support from the company.

  • Amount: Up to $25,000 from NSERC (no cash required from company).
  • Timeline: Rolling applications, no deadlines, 4 – 6 week turnaround on approvals.
  • Eligibility: Company must operate from a Canadian base. Eligible collaborations include focused projects with specific short-term objectives with an academic researcher from a Canadian University. No limit on how many Engage grants that a company can hold.

NSERC Collaborative Research and Development (CRD)

A longer term research or development project, usually following an NSERC Engage project with the same faculty partners for projects up to 5 years in length to solve a larger R&D issue.

  • Amount: 25-75% of project expenses covered through NSERC grant funding.
  • Timeline: Rolling applications, no deadlines.
  • Eligibility: Company must operate from a Canadian base. IP ownership to be agreed on by both partners.

Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation – Preclinical Drug Discovery

Seeks to fill the critical translational funding gap between basic research and later stage drug development by funding promising preclinical drug discovery and biomarker development programs relevant to Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias and cognitive aging.

  • Amount: $150,000 – $600,000
  • Timeline: 2016 Quarterly Deadlines for applications: March 18, June 3, September 2, December 9 (LOIs due at 2 weeks prior to deadline)
  • Eligibility: offer funding for Alzheimer’s drug discovery and preclinical development, clinical trials, and biomarker development research. Visit their Research Priorities for specific information about their interests.

    • Working in academia and biotechnology companies
    • Based in the U.S. and worldwide

Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) – Innovation Grant

Created to support innovative, creative problem solving in cancer research. The goal of this CCSRI grant program is to support unconventional concepts, approaches or methodologies to address problems in cancer research. Innovation projects will include elements of creativity, curiosity, investigation, exploration and opportunity. Successful projects may be based on “high risk” ideas, but will have the potential for “high reward” (i.e. to significantly impact our understanding of cancer and generate new approaches to combat the disease by introducing novel ideas into use or practice).

  • Amount: $100,000 – $200,000 (may be extended over 3 years)
  • Timeline: Two competitions / year – LOI submission August ’16 or February ’17
  • Eligibility: Applicants must hold a firm academic position (as a primary appointment) which allows the individual to engage in independent research activities for the duration of the project and includes the ability to supervise trainees and publish research results.The Principal Investigator must be based in, or formally affiliated with, an eligible Canadian Host Institution such as a university, research institute or health care agency.
